Jess + Lucas’ Off-Roading Adventure Elopement in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains
I had the pleasure of photographing their engagement photos last summer at one of my favorite mountainside locations near Denver (see their engagement session here). Jess + Lucas live for adventure and knew they wanted to incorporate that when exchanging their vows. The San Juan Mountains was the perfect choice for them!
Before you start to make plans there are things you need to know first. Keep reading for the best professional tips on planning the perfect adventure elopement in the San Juans.
Tips + Tricks
Best time of year. Summer (specifically July + August) brings beautiful rolling green mountains, wildflower meadows + access to endless hiking and off-roading trails. Fall brings picturesque autumn colors, typically late September thru mid-October. It’s important to keep in mind that weather conditions vary from year to year.
Opt for a weekday. The San Juan Mountains attract a lot of tourists during summertime, especially on weekends. Opting for a weekday allows for a little more privacy + slower paced town as well as additional vendors (like hair + makeup, florist, private caterer, etc) to be available.
Nearby towns. The San Juan Mountains are surrounded by a number of beautiful Hallmark vibe mountain towns like Ridgeway, Ouray, Silverton, Durango, Pagosa Springs + Telluride.
4×4 vehicle. If you want to properly explore the rugged San Juan Mountains, it’s highly encouraged to rent a 4×4 vehicle. You can do so when flying into Denver but there are also local companies in the previously mentioned towns that offer rentals. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
Permits. For the most part you don’t need a permit to elope but it depends on the location. Be sure to do your research as you’re searching for the perfection location. Information can easily be accessed by Googling.
Leave no trace. In order to continue loving our beautiful land, simply leave no trace by collecting any/all trash and personal belongings prior to your departure.
