There’s a reason so many couples fall in love with the idea of taking photos at the Washington National Cathedral. With soaring stone arches, peaceful gardens, and that European feel right in the middle of DC, it’s hard to beat. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, planning something special or simply wanting photos “just because”, the National Cathedral is the perfect place to tell your story.
Why Choose the National Cathedral for Your Couples Photos
The National Cathedral is one of my favorite locations in Washington DC for couples who love classic architecture and romanticism. Tucked away in Northwest DC, it offers the kind of backdrop that feels straight out of a European destination—without ever leaving the city.
If you’re drawn to spaces that feel both grand and peaceful, the National Cathedral is a perfect choice. It offers:
- A variety of stunning backdrops—from stone arches to winding garden paths
- A serene atmosphere, especially on weekday evenings or mornings
- An editorial, timeless feel that works beautifully for both casual and formal looks
Best Time to Take Photos at the National Cathedral
The Cathedral is beautiful in every season, but the time of year (and even the time of day) will totally change the vibe of your photos. Here’s what you can expect:
- Spring — The gardens start to bloom with colorful flowers and fresh greenery climbs the stone walls. It’s the perfect mix of soft, romantic and full of life.
- Summer — The grounds are lush and vibrant, with the trees providing shade and the gardens at their fullest. This season is perfect if you love bold colors and golden evening light.
- Fall — The ivy-covered walls turn shades of red and orange and the trees around the Cathedral shift into rich autumn tones. It’s cozy, warm and one of the dreamiest times for photos here.
- Winter — Without the leaves, the architecture really takes center stage. The stonework looks especially striking in soft winter light, and a dusting of snow (if you’re lucky!) makes it feel magical.
And when it comes to light:
Sunrise gives you soft, dreamy tones and the quietest atmosphere — usually with the grounds almost entirely to yourself. Perfect for an intimate, calm vibe.
Sunset bathes the Cathedral in golden light, making the stone glow and the gardens feel extra romantic. It’s ideal if you want rich, cinematic colors.
A Photography Permit is Required at the National Cathedral
If you’re considering the Cathedral for your photoshoot location, please note that a photography permit is required.
The permit fee is $250 and must be secured in advance through the Cathedral’s events office. This fee helps preserve the grounds and ensures sessions remain peaceful and uninterrupted. You can find more information via their website here.
While it’s an added investment, the experience of having this iconic venue as your photoshoot backdrop is truly worth it … I promise!
When you book with me, I’ll guide you through the permit process and help plan the timing so we can make the most of your session.
