Hi, I’m Megan — a DC / Northern Virginia elopement photographer. I wholeheartedly believe every couple deserves to celebrate their love story however their heart desires, without forcing tradition.
And this is exactly why I specialize in elopements and intimate weddings. These kinds of days allow couples to focus on what matters most: connection, presence and authenticity.
Whether it’s just the two of you or a small circle of loved ones, an elopement gives you the freedom to design a day that truly reflects your relationship without the pressure of expectations or an unnecessarily long guest list
Elopement vs. Intimate Wedding: What’s the Difference?
An elopement is typically centered almost entirely on the couple. It usually includes just the two of you, or a very small guest count (parents & siblings) and focuses on the experience rather than a traditional wedding structure.
An intimate wedding includes a small guest count (no more than 50 guests) and is a more scaled-down version of a traditional wedding but with so much more intention.
What matters most is how you want the day to feel. If you’re drawn to a quiet, personal experience with very few moving parts, an elopement may be the right fit. If you want something deeply meaningful but still rooted in tradition shared with your closest loved ones, an intimate wedding might make more sense.
What an Elopement in DC Can Look Like
DC offers timeless architecture, historic streets and a refined, editorial feel … all amazing aspects to make your day feel, and look, special. It’s perfect for couples who want the city’s energy while still keeping moments intimate and personal.
There are endless ways to design your DC elopement. A few ideas:
- Get ready together in a boutique DC hotel, a stylish Airbnb, or a charming townhouse
- Exchange vows in a quiet garden, intimate courtyard or meaningful part of the city
- Take a slow stroll to a few favorite spots: historic streets, iconic architecture, or hidden gems for portraits that feel personal.
- Include personal touches that make it yours: handwritten vows, heirloom veil / jewelry, a meaningful song or your fur baby.
- Celebrate in your own way: a rooftop toast overlooking the city, your favorite coffee shop or a private dinner at a restaurant that’s special to you.
These are just a few ideas to inspire you. I always encourage couples to plan a relaxed evening together to chat about what you each envision for your day. The goal is to think about the moments that will feel most meaningful to you both.
What You Need to Elope in Washington DC
From a logistics standpoint, eloping in DC is fairly straightforward, but there are a few things to plan for.
At a minimum, couples need:
- A valid DC marriage license (application information here)
- An officiant who is authorized to marry in Washington DC
- Two witnesses (this can sometimes be arranged depending on your plans)
Beyond that, each location may have its own rules or permit requirements and policies can change over time. Some places allow ceremonies, some allow portraits only and others may require paid (or unpaid) permits.
As your elopement photographer, I’ll help you navigate these details ahead of time so your day runs smoothly and effortlessly.
