(And How to Plan Your Photoshoot)
This spring marked my very first Cherry Blossom season in DC since moving from Colorado last summer. I’ve photographed a session in the Kwanzan Cherry Blossoms before (see this sweet maternity session), but truthfully nothing prepared me for the unpredictability of DC’s peak bloom.
Timing blossoms, dodging crowds, and planning around ever-changing Spring weather felt like a bit of a puzzle, but it was so worth it. After going through it myself, I wanted to share what I learned about planning a cherry blossom photoshoot in DC, so you can actually enjoy the experience without stressing over the blooms.
Why Cherry Blossom Season Is So Unpredictable
Peak bloom changes every single year based on weather . A few warm days can speed everything up, while a cold snap can delay it.
And once they do bloom? They don’t last long. We’re talking about a window of just a few days where the blossoms look full, soft, and at their absolute best before petals start falling.
That’s why flexibility is everything when planning a cherry blossom photoshoot.
Sunrise Weekday Sessions Only (Trust Me on This)
Cherry blossom season in DC is busy. Like… thousands of people kind of busy. Whatever you’re thinking in your head, triple it … no exaggeration. This is why I personally will only ever photograph Cherry Blossom session at sunrise on weekdays.
Flexibility is KEY
If there’s one thing I would emphasize the most, it’s this:
Your flexibility matters more than anything else.
Unlike other sessions where we can reschedule easily or work around conditions, cherry blossom sessions require a bit more flexibility. The ideal approach is:
- Keeping your schedule open within a potential bloom window
- Being ready to move quickly when peak bloom is announced
- Trusting your photographer to guide timing based on conditions
For fellow Type-A people like myself, it can be a little bit stressful but I promise it’s worth it!
