There is something about fall in Washington, DC that makes the entire city feel a little more romantic.
The crisp air, colorful trees, historic brick rowhomes, quiet cobblestone streets and warm light create the most beautiful backdrop for an engagement session. And if you ask me, Georgetown in the fall is one of the prettiest places in the entire DC area for engagement photos.
Why Georgetown Is So Beautiful for Fall Engagement Photos
Georgetown has almost everything I look for in an engagement session location: beautiful architecture, natural scenery, variety and plenty of opportunities to simply walk around and let the session unfold naturally. No two sessions look the same and that’s the most beautiful part if you ask me.
The neighborhood’s historic rowhomes and brick sidewalks are very well loved, but they’re especially beautiful in fall. Add in the changing leaves, ivy-covered walls, charming front steps & tree-lined streets and you can create a gallery that feels distinctly Washington, DC without looking overly posed.
And then … there’s the waterfront.
Georgetown Waterfront Park gives couples a completely different setting just a short walk from the neighborhood streets. From the waterfront, you can photograph the Potomac River and iconic Key Bridge while still keeping that romantic fall atmosphere.
When Is the Best Time for Fall Engagement Photos in Washington, DC?
Fall color in Washington, DC can vary from year to year depending on weather, but on average mid October to early November are the months I start looking toward for beautiful fall vibes.
Even if one particular tree hasn’t reached peak color yet, we still have historic architecture, brick sidewalks, ivy, waterfront views and plenty of greenery to work with. Not to mention the whole neighborhood is decorated so beautifully.
And when the fall colors are at their peak, it’s pure magic.
What to Wear for a Fall Georgetown Engagement Session
Fall is one of my favorite seasons for outfits because you can incorporate texture, layers and rich seasonal colors without feeling overly themed.
For a Georgetown session, I love outfits that feel classic and elevated. Think:
- Sweaters & textured knits
- Dresses with boots
- Neutral coats & jackets
- Denim paired with rich autumn colors
- Deep greens, blues, browns, creams & burgundy
- Simple, timeless accessories
Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable moving around in. We’ll be walking, sitting, cuddling & exploring throughout your session, so your outfits should feel like something you would actually wear for a beautiful fall day together.
A Few Tips for a Session in Georgetown
Plan for sunrise.
This is the easiest way to avoid crowds, cars and distractions. It also gives you the softest light on the streets and buildings.
Stay off the main roads.
The back residential areas of Georgetown are much quieter and photograph best. Once you move away from Wisconsin Ave and the main shopping streets, everything slows down.
Plan to walk between spots.
Some of the best locations aren’t “set” spots but rather little pockets you find while naturally moving through the neighborhood.
