Linsey & John’s Adventure Elopement at Brainard Lake in Colorado

For couples with love for adventure skipping a big traditional wedding & opting to hike in the mountains to exchange vows against breathtaking views has become extremely popular in recent years. Brainard Lake is a great location option that offers this unique experience but is also easily accessible.

Per Recreation.gov, Brainard Lake Recreation Area is uniquely set in a glacially carved valley offering spectacular panoramic views of Brainard Lake, surrounding subalpine forest & high peaks along the Continental Divide. The Recreation Area serves as a key gateway to Indian Peaks Wilderness, the most-accessible Wilderness area from the Denver metro area.

How to Elope at Brainard Lake

Best time of year. In my opinion, the best time of year to elope at Brainard Lake is summer & fall when the main road is accessible. This timeframe is typically late-June thru late-October, but is weather dependent.

Of course you can elope at Brainard Lake in the winter but once the snow starts the main gate will close. This means you’ll need snowshoe or cross-country ski in from the winter parking lot in order to reach Brainard Lake / other trailheads, which is about 2 miles.

Timed Entry Reservations. Due to the popularity of the area a timed entry ticket is required to gain entrance. Simply visit recreation.gov for more information.

Permits. At the time of publishing of this blog post there are no paid permits required for eloping inside Brainard Lake Recreation Gov. It’s always a good idea to call the National Forest Service just to ensure rules haven’t changed.

Inclement weather. Colorado is notorious for moody, unpredictable weather but that won’t stop us from creating everlasting memories! Be prepared for changing weather conditions; afternoon storms are very common in the mountains & depending on what time of year you’re eloping, it could turn into snow.

Pack accordingly. With that said, be sure to pack accordingly. A few suggestions:

-Plenty of water

-Sunscreen & bug spray

-Facial tissues

-Leggings, jacket, gloves and/or hot hands as it gets cold on the hike back after the sun sets.

Leave no trace. In order for the whole world to continue loving our beautiful land, simply leave no trace by collecting any/all trash and personal belongings prior to your departure.
