Georgetown in the spring is one of my favorite places to photograph in DC. Historic architecture, quiet residential streets and seasonal blooms make it an easy backdrop without needing to overthink much (especially when you’re waking up so early).
Emily & Ben recently moved to Georgetown from New York City and wanted their maternity session to feel rooted in their new everyday life here. We met early in the morning to avoid crowds and take advantage of softer light. Sunrise in Georgetown is especially worth the early wakeup call. The streets are quiet, parking is much easier (huge bonus in DC) and you can actually move through the neighborhood without constantly stepping aside for foot traffic.
We spent most of the session just walking around their neighborhood and stopping wherever it felt right, which is really what they wanted: something that reflected their day-to-day life in this season before their baby boy arrives.
What makes Georgetown special
Georgetown has a very distinct feel compared to the rest of DC. It’s one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and you can still see that history in the quieter residential pockets tucked just beyond the main roads.
What stands out most is how walkable everything is. You can move between a variety of backdrops within a short distance without needing to drive or over-plan locations.
It works best when you keep it simple. Just walking, stopping when something feels right and letting the neighborhood lead the pace of the session. You never know what you’ll come across!
A Few Tips for a Session in Georgetown
Plan for sunrise.
This is the easiest way to avoid crowds, cars and distractions. It also gives you the softest light on the streets and buildings.
Stay off the main roads.
The back residential areas of Georgetown are much quieter and photograph best. Once you move away from Wisconsin Ave and the main shopping streets, everything slows down.
Plan to walk between spots.
Some of the best locations aren’t “set” spots but rather little pockets you find while naturally moving through the neighborhood.
Timing for blooms matters.
If you want beautiful florals like in Emily & Ben’s session plan for photos no earlier than late-April to allow time for all the beautiful blooms to awaken after winter.
