If you’re searching for a beautiful, timeless location for your next family session in Northern Virginia, Morven Park in Leesburg is one of my absolute favorite places to photograph.
As a Northern Virginia family photographer serving Leesburg, Loudoun County, Arlington, Alexandria, and Washington DC, I’m always looking for locations that offer both natural beauty and a relaxed, stress-free experience. Morven Park checks every box.
Why Morven Park is Perfect for Family Photos in Leesburg, Virginia
Morven Park offers a stunning mix of open fields, tree-lined paths, historic architecture and at sunset, golden-hour light that feels oh so magical.
What makes it especially great for families is how much space it offers for children to simply be themselves. My sessions are children-led, which means I follow your little ones’ energy and let the story unfold naturally.
Here kids have the freedom to explore, move & play without feeling confined or directed. Because let’s be real … no kid wants to be forced to smile at the camera constantly … heck I don’t want to myself haha!
Photography Permits at Morven Park (Important Information)
If you’re planning a session at Morven Park, it’s important to know that the park does require photographers and clients to follow their official photography policy.
For the best soft & golden light, I always schedule sessions 2 hours before sunset, which varies from season to season.
Morven Park is open to the public daily from 7 am to 6 pm. For seasons with earlier sunset times like fall and winter you’re able to just register for a free daily photography permit as you’ll be on property within open hours.
For late-spring and summer nights a $100 after-hours photography permit is required in order to capture that beautiful sunset glow.
Applying is very quick & easy and can be done online here. This helps ensure the park remains beautiful and accessible for everyone.
What to Wear for Family Photos Here
Because Morven Park is naturally beautiful, I recommend keeping outfits simple and timeless.
Neutral tones, earthy colors, soft creams, muted blues and warm textures photograph beautifully against all the greenery at Morven Park. Coordinating instead of matching helps your images feel elevated and natural.
Pro Tip: Instead of bright, stark white, I always recommend choosing soft whites, ivory or creamy off-whites. These tones feel warmer on camera (which is important for my editing style) and blend more naturally with the outdoor light and scenery.
