There’s a reason why fall in Northern Virginia / Washington DC feels like the perfect season for photos. The trees begin to turn shades of golden yellow, warm orange & deep red, the air gets crisp and suddenly everything feels a little cozier.
If you’re hoping for peak fall color, there is a little more planning involved than simply picking a date in October. Here’s everything you need to know about planning cozy fall couples photos in Northern Virginia and DC.
When Do the Leaves Change in Northern Virginia / Washington, DC?
One of the biggest questions I get about fall sessions is “When will the leaves be at their peak?”
My honest answer? It depends.
In Northern Virginia, fall foliage typically reaches peak color around mid-to-late October, with Virginia’s tourism resources generally placing Northern Virginia’s typical peak window around October 15–25. But that’s just a guideline, not a guarantee.
Fall foliage changes gradually across Virginia, moving from the higher elevations in the west toward lower elevations and farther east as the season progresses. Even within the same area, different tree species change at different times.
You’re probably wondering why it isn’t so predictable?
The changing of the leaves is influenced by things like shortening daylight hours and cooler temperatures, while weather conditions throughout the year can affect how the season develops. Virginia’s Department of Forestry notes that particularly hot or dry summers can cause trees to change earlier than usual, while cool, clear conditions can contribute to beautiful red foliage.
That means one year, your favorite tree-lined road might be at its most colorful during the third week of October, while another year the same area could be a little earlier or later.
The good news?
You don’t need every tree to be at peak color for beautiful fall photos.
Some of my favorite sessions happen when the leaves are just beginning to change. A mixture of green, yellow, orange & red can create so much dimension and variety in your images. And once the leaves begin to fall, those golden leaves on the ground can be just as beautiful as the ones still on the trees.
What to Wear for Cozy Fall Couples Photos
Fall is one of my favorite seasons for outfits because you can incorporate texture, layers and rich seasonal colors without feeling overly themed. Think:
- Layers, texture, movement & warm fall tones
- Cream, ivory, beige & camel
- Rust, burnt orange & warm terracotta
- Olive & muted greens
- Burgundy & deep reds
- Black and charcoal
- Denim
- Subtle fall-toned patterns
- Chunky sweater, cardigan or knit dress
- Cozy scarves, jackets & other layers
- Flowy skirts
- Textures like knit, wool, suede & corduroy
Most importantly, choose something you feel comfortable moving around in. We’ll be walking, sitting & cuddling throughout your session, so your outfits should feel like something you would actually wear for a beautiful fall day together.
What If the Leaves Aren’t at Peak Color?
There is no single magical day when every tree in Northern Virginia suddenly becomes perfectly orange and red. Fall is a transition and that transition is part of what makes it so beautiful & magical.
A session at the beginning of the season might give you a beautiful mix of green and golden leaves. A session closer to peak might give you those rich oranges and reds everyone dreams about. Later in the season, you may have more bare branches and colorful leaves covering the ground. All three can create beautiful photographs.

Once we get closer to your session date we start paying attention to the actual conditions in Northern Virginia / DC.
Virginia’s fall foliage reports and maps are helpful resources as the season gets underway, but they’re still forecasts rather than guarantees. My advice is to use foliage predictions as a planning tool, not a promise.
Book early as my fall calendar fills up quickly. Stay flexible when possible. And trust that we can create beautiful photographs whether the leaves are just beginning to turn or are completely covered in autumn color.
